Spanish Point is a headland in Pembroke Parish, about five kilometres north-west of Hamilton, reaching out to form the eastern shore at the entrance to the Great Sound. Spanish Point Road winds down to a little bay full of moored boats, with Spanish Point Park on one side and the Spanish Point Boat Club on the other. The local kite community’s spot guide calls it a popular spot for windsurfers and wingfoilers.
The window is wide. The spot guide gives it south-west round through west and north to north-north-east, and the Bermuda Weather Service records the prevailing winter wind as south-westerly or westerly from November to March, so Spanish Point works on the island’s usual winter days. Out front it is mostly chop. Tuck in behind the small island off the point, Cobbler’s Island, and the water goes completely flat.
Winter water is not tropical: the Bermuda Weather Service’s 1949 to 1992 mean puts the sea at about 18 to 20°C from December to March, so bring a full wetsuit.
Not yet checked against a weather station, and a calibration is not a check, so treat these figures as a guide.
