Hour-by-hour & month-by-month wind

Rideable-day share by month, all three sports

Share of days with three or more daylight hours over each sport's threshold, counted from the record at 12 kt, Windsurf 13 kt and Wing 12 kt. L.F. Wade International, Bermuda has been checked against the model at 12 kn only, so the 13 kn Windsurf figure is counted but not checked against it.

Per-launch tide windows

Shelly Bay Beach
Low—Mid—High—

The local spot guide notes smooth kickers at low tide and little room near the trees at high tide. Hours per state unknown until tide data arrives.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

National park rulesShelly Bay Park is a protected area under the Bermuda National Parks Act 1986. The park regulations count windsurf boards and surfboards as vessels. No one may use a vessel where a notice closes the area to vessels, use one in a way likely to endanger other people, or store one in the park except where a notice allows it. Sport and parking are allowed only where notices permit them. Read the notices at the park before you ride.
Swimming zone buoy lineA buoy line has been laid at Shelly Bay Beach over the Cup Match holiday to mark a safe swimming zone, and the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard has advised vessel operators not to cross it. When the line is in, keep kites, boards and wings out of the swimming zone. Give swimmers a wide berth at all times.
Trees, road and a tight launchAt high tide there is little space near the trees and self-launching is hard. Debris and kelp sometimes lie on the beach. North Shore Road runs just behind the beach, so do not fly a kite near it.
Shallow waterThe cove stays shallow even at high tide. Fins and foils can hit the bottom, so ride slowly near the beach until you know the depth.
Winter fronts and hurricane seasonWinter fronts often bring gales or strong winds. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Check the Bermuda Weather Service forecast before every session.
Shallows and the launch

The cove stays shallow even at high tide, and low tide creates smooth kickers. At high tide the beach is narrow by the trees and self-launching is hard. Debris and kelp sometimes lie on the sand. Check the depth before you ride fast on a fin or a foil.

Swimmers, the road and winter fronts

A buoy line has marked a safe swimming zone at Shelly Bay Beach over the Cup Match holiday, and vessel operators are advised not to cross it. North Shore Road runs just behind the beach, so keep kites away from it. Winter fronts often bring gales or strong winds, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.

Kite sizes for November

Derived from the winter wind, not from a fitted quiver: the Bermuda Weather Service airport means of 13 to 15 kt, December to March, and the record's 17 to 19 kt mean over rideable daylight hours, November to March, calibrated against a 2.5 km model and checked against the L.F. Wade station. Fronts blow harder than the mean: size down on those days.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ecmwf_ifs at 9 km, cell 5.25 km from the spot, January 2017 to September 2026, 9 to 10 years a month, calibrated by month and hour against the 2.5 km ECCC HRDPS record over the years both cover, then checked against the Bermuda Weather Service METAR station at L.F. Wade International 6.66 km away, an airfield (IEM ASOS/METAR archive): it sits 0.2 points from that station over 2017 to 2022 and 1.3 points over 2023 to 2026. Single months still differ from the station by about 6 points either way. All twelve months publish.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share. The station was checked at 12 kt only, so the 13 kt Windsurf figure is counted but not checked.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from the local spot guide; strength from Weather Service airport means (1949 to 1992) and the record. Not measured at the bay.
02The month’s recordsRecordNine to ten years a month, calibrated against the 2.5 km HRDPS record and checked against the L.F. Wade station.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenChecked on each business’s own website, and its Google listing where it has one, most recently on 29 September 2026. Price bands only where a price is published. Listing photos are Google Maps photos, credited on the spot page.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Hazards, shallows, swimmersWrittenRules from the National Parks Regulations 1988 and a 2021 Coast Guard advisory. Physical hazards from the local spot guide. Not surveyed.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenSizes derived from the winter mean. Water temperature is the Weather Service island climatology, 1949 to 1999, not this bay.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 5.3 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Shelly Bay

An open-licence photograph of Shelly Bay: the page shows Google Maps photos. Tide tables. Surveyed launch coordinates. Whether the buoy line is laid year round or only in summer. What the park notices at Shelly Bay say about vessels and sport. Any rescue cover on the water. Windsurf and wing thresholds run through the hourly record. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
