Per-launch tide windows

Ponta do Santo Cristo
Low—Mid—High—

Sources describe flat, shallow water inside around low tide, and a bigger shorebreak and a strong alongshore current as the tide floods. Hours per state unknown until tide data arrives.

Kauli Seadi Water Sports Club
Low—Mid—High—

No launch-specific tide note is sourced. The bay-wide pattern applies: flatter around low tide, more shorebreak as it floods.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Reef, sandbank & currents

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Navy kitesurf areaBrazilian Navy rules for sport and recreation (NORMAM-211/DPC) set the navigation area for kitesurfing at 200 m or more from the beach baseline. On sea beaches the baseline is the line where the waves break. The same rules leave windsurfing areas to state and municipal authorities, and recommend a class V (sports) life jacket and a wakeboard-type helmet for kitesurfing. No municipal zoning for São Miguel do Gostoso was found. Ask a school where to launch and ride on the day.
Offshore wind and downwindersThe wind comes from the right and one local source describes it as side-offshore. In July and August it can swing S to SE, which Dr. Wind describes as offshore in the bay and not good for kiting. On 6 December 2024, 24 kitesurfers on a kite trip from São Miguel do Gostoso were left adrift when the wind turned offshore and were rescued at Guamaré by the fire brigade, the Navy and local boats. Plan any downwind trip with support and someone who knows the coast.
High-tide current and shorebreakAround high tide, especially in the first hours, a strong current runs parallel to the beach and a shorebreak of a metre or more is common. It makes launching and landing harder. Learners should ride around low tide, inside the school area.
Reef and sandbankA rock reef and sandbank lie offshore and break waves up to about 2 m. The water is often cloudy, so the reef is hard to see. Foils and fins can strike it. Walk the beach at low tide before you ride an unfamiliar line.
Rescue coverDr. Wind lists a rescue boat and the Kauli Seadi club a rescue jet ski. Neither states the hours that cover runs, and no rescue cover outside school hours is confirmed. Be able to self-rescue. In an emergency call 193 (fire brigade) or 192 (SAMU ambulance).
Reef and sandbank

A rock reef and a sandbank lie off Ponta do Santo Cristo. Sources put them between about 300 m and 1 km out, with waves of up to about 2 m breaking on them, and one guide says the reef can dry at low tide. The water is often cloudy, so foils and fins can reach the reef before you see it. Walk the beach at low tide before you ride a new line.

Currents and offshore wind

Around high tide, especially in the first hours, a strong current runs parallel to the beach and the shorebreak grows. The wind comes from the right and one local source calls it side-offshore. In July and August it can swing S to SE, which Dr. Wind describes as offshore in the bay. In December 2024, 24 kitesurfers on a kite trip from the town were left adrift when the wind turned offshore and were rescued at Guamaré. Plan any downwind trip with support.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ecmwf_ifs at 9 km, cell 3.06 km from the spot, no correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share. No longer the Kite share raised to a curve (WC-024 phase 4).
01Speed bands, hour-of-day sharesRecordCounted from the same hourly series as the shares: daylight hours in each 4 kt band, and the share of days over the threshold at each hour from 8am to 6pm. The same charts as the spot page.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenFrom the schools and guides, which disagree on the wind angle (side-onshore to side-offshore). Not yet derived from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordMonth detail. ECMWF IFS HRES at 9 km, the cell 3.1 km from the spot; gusts on the sand can exceed it.

04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Hazards, reef, currentsWrittenNavy rules read first hand; physical hazards from school and rider guides and a news report. Not surveyed.

Hand-drawn mapsMissingNo maps drawn for this spot, so the map pages are left out.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 3.1 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for São Miguel do Gostoso

Tide tables. Municipal zoning or signage for the beach. Water quality monitoring (the state programme does not cover the town). Rescue cover outside school hours. Price bands for stays. Current activity for Tribo do Kite. Coordinates for the launches. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
