Hour-by-hour & month-by-month wind

Rideable-day share by month, all three sports

Share of days with three or more daylight hours over each sport's threshold, counted from the record at 12 kt, Windsurf 13 kt and Wing 12 kt. San Juan buoy (CariCOOS PR2, NDBC 41053) has been checked against the model at 12 kn only, so the 13 kn Windsurf figure is counted but not checked against it.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ecmwf_ifs at 9 km, cell 1.76 km from the spot, January 2017 to September 2026, 9 to 10 years a month, corrected by month and hour against the CariCOOS San Juan buoy (NDBC 41053) 4.26 km away. March, April, May, November and December are withheld: their error out of sample is over 10 points.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from the Puerto Rico windsurf federation (east); Kite Puerto Rico names trade winds. Strength and time of day read from the record; the school’s own range is 15 to 25 knots.
02The month’s recordsRecordNine to ten years a month, corrected against the San Juan buoy; the uncorrected model read far lighter than the buoy. No share shows for March, April, May, November and December.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenKite Puerto Rico, Wind Addiction, the Federación de Windsurfing de Puerto Rico and Numero Uno Beach House, each confirmed on its own website. Three more stays on 30 September 2026, one of them on its Google listing alone because its own site no longer loads. No price band.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Hazards, lifeguards and rulesWrittenRules from Puerto Rico’s Navigation and Water Safety Law (Law 430 of 2000, official text revised 28 August 2026); no DRNA regulation or San Juan rule read. The wind drop from a US Coast Guard release; rocks and coral from the windsurf federation. The emergency number from Puerto Rico’s 9-1-1 Emergency Systems Bureau. The lifeguard line is a map tag; the rental rule is the school’s own.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenRoad distances from OSRM routing. Parking from the windsurf federation. Warm water from the school, no temperature figure. Sizes derived from the session mean.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for either launch.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 1.8 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Ocean Park, San Juan

A San Juan municipal rule, or a DRNA regulation, on kiting or windsurfing at Ocean Park: the DRNA site did not answer and no current municipal code was reachable. A current or shore-break source for Ocean Park itself. Where the school launches, and a surveyed position for either launch. A windsurf school or hire at Ocean Park itself. A water temperature, a water quality source and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Crowds by month. Tide information. Figures for March, April, May, November and December, where the buoy check left too wide a margin. A licensed photograph with riders in it.
