Ocean Park, San Juan
84% of May days clear 12 kt for three daylight hours or more.
May sits outside the best months here. This report carries the record for May as it is, and no direction or session norm, because there is none to quote. Section 02 shows the year-by-year spread; section 06 shows which months to come instead.
Hour-by-hour & month-by-month wind
Rideable-day share by month, all three sports
Share of days with three or more daylight hours over each sport's threshold, counted from the record at 12 kt, Windsurf 13 kt and Wing 12 kt. San Juan buoy (CariCOOS PR2, NDBC 41053) has been checked against the model at 12 kn only, so the 13 kn Windsurf figure is counted but not checked against it.
Blue fill scales with the share. Selected month outlined. Threshold per row: Kite 12 kt · Windsurf 13 kt · Wing 12 kt.
Where the wind sits, May
Share of daylight hours in each speed band, blue above the threshold.
Not drawn: 5% of daylight hours under 4 kt.
When in the day, May
Share of days over 12 kt at each daylight hour.
Rideable hours, not all hours. Every wind figure in this report is the mean over hours above the threshold.
May's own records
The month's own figures from ten Mays in the record, 2017 to 2026. Not the year's average.
What the percentage hides. A month at 80% can be twenty-four steady days or three windy weeks broken by a dead front.

Ocean Park is a long sand beach. Kite Puerto Rico speaks of deep water off the beach and waves on its outer reef. The Puerto Rico windsurf federation says there are quite a few rocks and coral on San Juan’s beaches, that areas with a lot of foot traffic tend to be sandier, and advises assuming there are sea urchins in all the rocks. At Punta Las Marías it describes relatively flat water for about a kilometre, with waves on a reef far from shore. No source read describes a current or the shore break at Ocean Park.
No lifeguard post is mapped at Ocean Park. In July 2025 the US Coast Guard and Puerto Rico Police rescued six kite surfers left adrift one to two miles off Ocean Park Beach, after their kites reportedly failed in a sudden drop of wind across the area. Kite Puerto Rico rents kit only to riders with IKO Level 3K or who can show an equivalent independent riding ability. Puerto Rico’s Navigation and Water Safety Law prohibits navigation vehicles, boards with or without a sail among them, from operating in areas reserved for bathers, and sets a $250 administrative fine for using one carelessly or negligently in a way that puts others at risk. No San Juan municipal rule has been read. In an emergency call 911.

Sources, and their limits
Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.
The record
Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 1.8 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.
What we could not source for Ocean Park, San Juan
A San Juan municipal rule, or a DRNA regulation, on kiting or windsurfing at Ocean Park: the DRNA site did not answer and no current municipal code was reachable. A current or shore-break source for Ocean Park itself. Where the school launches, and a surveyed position for either launch. A windsurf school or hire at Ocean Park itself. A water temperature, a water quality source and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Crowds by month. Tide information. Figures for March, April, May, November and December, where the buoy check left too wide a margin. A licensed photograph with riders in it.
