Masirah is an island about 15 km off the south-east coast of Oman, reached by ferry from Shannah. In the Khareef, the summer monsoon season, the wind blows from the south, and Kiteboarding Oman describes it as steady day and night. The kite spots are flat-water lagoons and open wave beaches, all within 15 to 20 minutes’ drive.
May to August is the season. In every one of those months more than eight days in ten clear 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, and July is the pick, at more than nine in ten. The mean over those rideable hours sits between 16 and 19 knots, strongest in July. It blows from the morning: in the season three windy days in five or more are already blowing at eight, rising to eight or nine in ten by late afternoon. From October to February the share falls to between about two and three days in ten, when Kiteboarding Oman says the wind turns northerly or westerly. The summer is powered up.
Shannah port is about 440 km by road, which GET Kitesurf Oman puts at a four to five-hour drive, and the ferry takes about an hour.
