Nananu-i-Ra
What it's actually like
Nananu-i-Ra is a small island about 3 km off the north coast of Viti Levu, near Rakiraki in Fiji’s Ra Province: 3.5 square kilometres, rising to 180 metres. It sits in the Vatu-i-Ra passage, and Wind Sports Fiji runs a lodge on it built around wind sports.
The season here is the trade wind. Wind Sports Fiji opens in April and closes late in November, and describes the trades as usually 20 to 25 knots from the south-east to east-south-east, funnelled through the passage. It says the usual pattern is seven to nine days of steady trades, then two or three lighter days. From December to March it runs no wind sports programme: the weather is less stable, with a significant chance of cyclones that bring days of heavy rain. WindChaser shows no wind figures for the island. The nearest model cell is 5.56 km away and no weather station has checked it, so rideable days are withheld.
Its boat also runs 5 km and 8 km downwinders from a reef on the edge of the Vatu-i-Ra passage back to the home beach, glassy at low tide and choppier nearer home.
