Zones, rock ledge & currents

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Hookipa zonesZone A is for swimming and surfing only: no sailboard or other water craft. Zone B is designated for surfing when five or more people are surfing in it, and Zone C when ten or more are; in both, no sailboard may be operated within the surf break area. In Zone C, access for sailboards between the surf break and the shoreline must be provided at all times. Zone D is for pole and net fishing, with no sailboards.
Rock ledge and currentsAction Sports Maui says Hookipa is strictly for advanced windsurfers only: a sailor must be an accomplished wave sailor and a very strong swimmer. A tiny sand beach and a big rock ledge make launching and landing critical. The currents are strong and drag towards the rocks, and the shore downwind is rocky. For a first time wave sailing on Maui, Action Sports Maui points to Lowers at Kanaha.
Windsurfing rulesGo in and out by the most direct route the wind allows, follow the rules of the road for sailing vessels, and keep at least 200 feet from a dive flag.
Humpback whalesWithin 200 nautical miles of the islands of Hawaii it is unlawful to approach within 100 yards of a humpback whale, by any means.
Kites launch at LanesThe Maui Kitesurf Community says there is no kite launching at Hookipa: kiters launch at Lanes, just west. It says kiting at Hookipa is by agreement only when fewer than ten windsurfers and surfers are out.
Lifeguards and emergenciesThe County of Maui says lifeguards are on duty from 8am to 4:30pm; Hawaii Ocean Safety lists 8am to 4:45pm. When no lifeguard is in the tower, call 911.
The rock ledge, the reef and the currents

Hookipa has a tiny sand beach and a big rock ledge, and launching and landing over it is critical. The breaks are reef, close to the shore. The currents are strong and drag towards the rocks, and the shore downwind is rocky. Action Sports Maui says a sailor must be an accomplished wave sailor and a very strong swimmer.

The zones, surfers and the kite launch

Under Hawaii Administrative Rules §13-256-127, Zone A is for swimming and surfing only; Zones B and C are designated for surfing when five or more, and ten or more, people are surfing in them, and no sailboard may be operated within their surf break areas; Zone D is for pole and net fishing. Guides give surfers the mornings, before 11am; the state chapter read has no such rule for Hookipa, so it is local custom. Kiters launch at Lanes, just west, not at Hookipa. Lifeguards are on duty from 8am to 4:30pm, per the County of Maui (Hawaii Ocean Safety lists 8am to 4:45pm); when no lifeguard is in the tower, call 911.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ecmwf_ifs (ECMWF IFS HRES) at 9 km, cell 3.63 km from the spot, January 2017 to September 2026, 9 to 10 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from Safe to Swim Hawaii, an independent safety guide; no first-hand source gives the facing of the launch. Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordA 9 km global model, not a station. Not checked against a weather station or a second model: treat the shares as a guide.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenConfirmed on each business’s own website; no school or hire at Hookipa itself. One stay is on the beach next door; a hostel and a hotel in Paia, 3 km away, were added on 30 September 2026. Everything nearer is a private holiday let. No price band on a listing; the cost tier rests on HST’s published lesson prices.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Hazards, zones and rulesWrittenZones and windsurfing rules read first hand in Hawaii Administrative Rules chapter 13-256; the whale rule in 50 CFR 216.19. Lifeguard hours from the County of Maui (the state list gives 4:45pm). The 11am custom and the kite agreement from guides and the club, not law.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenRoad distance from OSRM routing; parking and park hours from the County of Maui. Water temperature from Safe to Swim Hawaii, not measured. Sizes derived from the session mean.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launches. The zone map was not read.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 3.6 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Hookipa

The zone map (Exhibit "WW") that places zones A to D. A first-hand source for the facing of the launch. Crowds by month. A Hawaii Department of Health water quality reading, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide information. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
