Keros Beach, Limnos

What it's actually like

Keros is a long sandy bay on the east coast of Limnos, in the north Aegean, below the village of Kalliopi. The bay is closed off in shape, which gives it some shelter, and four kite and windsurf stations work along the beach. Riders fly into Limnos, usually via Athens, or take the ferry from Kavala to Myrina, and a hire car is the way to reach the bay.

The wind is the summer north to north-easterly, and the centres say it stays constant through the day, with the afternoon wind mainly thermal. KBC Limnos runs from 1 June to the end of September, and other guides give a season from Easter or June to November. A spot guide gives mid-June to mid-September as the heart of the season, with May and October as the edges. WindChaser's record for the bay, a 7 km model with no station check yet, puts the mean over rideable daylight hours at 14 to 15 kt from June to September.

The upwind end is flat, with a waist-deep standing area for the first 50 to 100 metres, which is why the schools teach beginners there.
