Shallows, seagrass zones & the boat channel

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

No kites in the LacThe island decree on the marine park prohibits moving on or above the waters of the Lac while attached to a kite or similar object, and prohibits jet skis in the Lac. Anywhere else in the marine park, kites are prohibited within 75 metres of the coast except at places the park manager designates.
Where each sport may rideSTINAPA allows windsurfing in the Marine Park only at Lac Bay, and kitesurfing only in the entry and exit zone at Atlantis Beach. It says windsurfing with a foil is currently condoned in the Lac because it is not zoned yet, and a new zoning is being discussed. Its page does not name wing foiling. Its Lac Bay map marks a line of turn-around buoys between the sailing area and the mangroves. No kite or windsurfing within 500 metres of Klein Bonaire, and downwinders need STINAPA's written consent. STINAPA also tells riders to mind divers, swimmers and fishing boats and to scan for divers beneath the waves. Ask your centre what applies on the day.
Seagrass zonesSTINAPA's director has said that surfing on the seagrass fields at Sorobon is not allowed. The zones are marked with buoys and ropes. Stay outside them, and give sea turtles room.
Nature feeEveryone who uses the marine park pays a fee of 40 US dollars per calendar year. People under 13, residents of Bonaire, Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba, and people staying on Bonaire for no more than 24 hours are exempt. Buy it before you go on the water.
Shallows and boatsThe bay is about waist deep in front of the centres, so fins and foils can touch the bottom, and it deepens suddenly to the north. Check the depth before you foil. Motorboats may run at up to 4 knots inside the buoyed channel between Cai and Sorobon and 2 knots elsewhere in the Lac, and rescue and enforcement boats are exempt. Keep clear of the channel.
Offshore wind at AtlantisAt Atlantis Beach the wind blows offshore, so a rider who cannot get back is carried away from the island. The kite schools run rescue boats for their riders. Ride only while that cover is out. In an emergency at sea, call the Coast Guard on 913, free, 24 hours a day.
Shallows and the drop-off

In front of the centres at Sorobon the bay is about waist deep over sand, and it stays smooth. To the north it deepens suddenly, and the edge shows as darker water. Fins and foils can touch the bottom in the shallows, so check the depth before you foil.

Seagrass zones and the boat channel

Seagrass fields at Sorobon are marked off with buoys and ropes, and STINAPA says surfing on them is not allowed. A line of turn-around buoys marks the edge of the sailing area towards the mangroves. Motorboats may run at up to 4 knots inside the buoyed channel between Cai and Sorobon and 2 knots elsewhere in the Lac. Keep clear of the channel.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ecmwf_ifs at 9 km, cell 3.45 km from the spot, no correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share. No longer the Kite share raised to a curve (WC-024 phase 4).
01Speed bands, hour-of-day sharesRecordCounted from the same hourly series as the shares: daylight hours in each 4 kt band, and the share of days over the threshold at each hour from 8am to 6pm. The same charts as the spot page.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenFrom published guides and school pages, cross-checked against the record's predominant direction (E in every month).
02The month's recordsRecordMonth detail. ECMWF IFS HRES at 9 km, the cell 3.5 km from the spot; gusts on the water can exceed it.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenChecked on each business’s own website or a named rider source, most recently on 27 September 2026. Price bands only where a price is published.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Hazards, zones, shallowsWrittenRules from the Eilandsbesluit onderwaterpark Bonaire and STINAPA's rules page and map. The seagrass rule is STINAPA's director as reported by Bonaire.nu. Locations described, not surveyed.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenSizes are derived from the guides' season range, not a fitted quiver. Water temperature is from school pages, not the record.
06Wing foiling and the new Lac zoningMissingSTINAPA's page does not name wing foiling, and the new zoning of the Lac it says is under discussion could not be read.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 3.5 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Lac Bay

Tide tables. The new zoning plan for the Lac and any written rule for wing foiling there. A primary text for the seagrass ban beyond STINAPA's director as reported. Windsurf and wing thresholds run through the hourly record. Crowd counts. Price bands. Coordinates for the launches and the Atlantis entry and exit zone. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
