Spiky mussels lie in the lagoon, and the bottom turns from sand at the edges to mud towards the centre. Wear booties or reef shoes. On the ocean side a reef lies about 700 metres offshore, and in the south-west monsoon waves of 3 to 5 feet break on it.
No rescue service covers the ocean side at Donkey Point. Vella Island is reached by boat in summer and is not suitable for beginners; go with a school that runs a rescue boat. In a medical emergency call 1990, the free island-wide ambulance service.
