Swimmers, rocks & rules

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

SwimmersThe swimming season runs from 15 June to 15 September, the same months as the wind. Keep clear of swimmers.
Marked swimming areasUnder Turkey’s Ports Regulation, swimming areas off beaches within port limits, up to 200 metres from the shore, are to be marked with floating markers from 1 April to 15 November each year. Ships and sea craft may not enter a marked swimming area. Keep out of any marked swimming area.
Breakwaters and rocksIstanbul Windsurf Center describes its bay as lying between breakwaters, and names rocks at the bay: beginners ride inside it, improvers outside the rocks. Ask the school where the rocks and breakwaters lie before sailing out.
EmergenciesIn an emergency call 112. The coast guard line, 158, is joined into 112.
The bay, the rocks and the water

Istanbul Windsurf Center describes its bay as lying between breakwaters, like a closed pool for beginners, with water of standing depth at the entry and open water beyond for improving and advanced riders. It names rocks at the bay: beginners ride inside it, improvers outside the rocks. Ask the school where the rocks and breakwaters lie before sailing out. Gazete Kadıköy describes the Caddebostan beach behind the Irmak schools as sand, on the beach and on the seabed. The Sea of Marmara’s monthly mean water temperature is 20.1°C in June, 23.4°C in July and 24.2°C in August, and 8.2°C in February (Turkish State Meteorological Service, 1970 to 2024).

Swimmers, rules and emergencies

The swimming season runs from 15 June to 15 September, the same months as the wind: keep clear of swimmers. Under Turkey’s Ports Regulation (article 22(14)), swimming areas off beaches within port limits, up to 200 metres from the shore, are to be marked with floating markers from 1 April to 15 November each year, and ships and sea craft may not enter a marked swimming area. No other written rule for sailing off the beach was found in a harbour master’s or municipal source. The school makes life jackets compulsory on the water. In Turkey all emergency lines, including the coast guard’s former 158, are joined in 112. In an emergency call 112.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from icon_eu (DWD ICON-EU) at 7 km, cell 2.96 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month, no station correction. Few windy hours behind each month.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from Istanbul Windsurf Center, which names the poyraz (north-east) and lodos (south-west) for Istanbul and trains in both; no source says which blows more here. Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordThree to four years a month. An independent model reads the shares higher here, and no weather station has settled it: treat the figures as a guide.
03Schools and kitWrittenIstanbul Windsurf Center’s own website, read 27 September 2026, with posts dated September 2026. No published price scale, so no band. One stay, a hotel a walk from the beach, confirmed on its own website and Google listing on 30 September 2026; a city beach used by locals carries no more.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Hazards, swimmers and rulesWrittenThe bay, breakwaters and rocks from the school’s own pages; the swimming season from Gazete Kadıköy; the swimming-area rule from the Ports Regulation, read first hand; the emergency number from the Interior Ministry. The regulation’s annex of port limits was not read.
06Airports, access, water, kite sizesWrittenRoad distances from OSRM routing; rail and parking from Marmara Yelken Kulübü; water temperature is the Sea of Marmara’s monthly mean, not measured at the beach. No kite sizes: kiting is not named here.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launch.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from DWD ICON-EU via Open-Meteo: a 7 km grid, read at the cell 3.0 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Caddebostan, Istanbul

Which of the poyraz and the lodos blows more at Caddebostan. Whether the Caddebostan shore lies inside the Istanbul harbour master’s port limits (the Ports Regulation’s annex was not read), and any Kadıköy municipality rule for the beach. The Health Ministry’s bathing water result read first hand, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Crowds by month. A water temperature measured at the beach. A published price scale for the school’s lessons. A rider stay. Tide information. A station check on the wind record. A surveyed launch position. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
