What it's actually like
Icaraizinho de Amontada is an old fishing village on the west coast of Ceará, home to a little over 2,000 people, according to the school Todos Al Agua. It sits in a bay dotted with palm trees, with dunes and wind turbines on the horizon, about 200 km from Fortaleza. The trade wind blows side-onshore across the bay.
June to December is the season. In every one of those months at least nine days in ten clear 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, and September reaches 100 per cent, with August and October above 99. The mean over those rideable hours sits between 14 and 17 knots, strongest from August to October. It blows all day: in September the wind clears 12 knots from 8am to 6pm on almost every day. The schools give the high season as June or July to January, with the strongest months between August and November, and February to May as the rainy season. March is the quietest month in the record, at about a third. From August to November the bay is properly lit.
Praia da Ponta is the kite spot, reached only by buggy or 4x4 along the beach in about 20 minutes, on firm sand, for beginners to intermediates.
