Pozo Izquierdo

What it's actually like

Pozo Izquierdo is a small village on the south-east coast of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, near Vecindario. The bay in front of it is a wave venue on the PWA World Tour, and the local beach ordinance reserves it for windsurfing whenever the wind is 10 knots or more. The north-east trade wind blows side-onshore, and the long wave breaks to the right.

May to September is the season in the record, and it is a big one: in July almost every day clears 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, at 98 per cent, and August is close behind at 94. The mean over those rideable hours is 19 to 22 knots, and the wind is up from the morning and holds all day. Even December, the lightest month, has more than half its days rideable. The record comes from a 9 km model, and Wind-Hounds puts summer days at 30 to 40 knots as the trade wind accelerates round the island. Pozowinds sizes summer sails at 3.4 to 4.2 square metres, and 4.2 to 5.3 the rest of the year, when the trades are lighter and the ground swell bigger. Come July it is nuking.

The bay of Pozo Izquierdo, its regatta course, is for windsurfing only when the wind is 10 knots (18.5 km/h) or more; below that, bodyboard, surf, kayak and paddle surf may use it.
