Per-launch notes

Pozo Izquierdo bay
Low—Mid—High—

The shorebreak is biggest at high tide and care is needed at low tide, the guides say. AEMET’s beach forecast for Pozo Izquierdo prints high and low tide times for three days ahead, from the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy. No tide data in the pipeline.

Salinas de Pozo
Low—Mid—High—

Pozowinds’ spot guide gives the tide at Salinas as low, with strong side currents and entry and exit through rocks. No tide data in the pipeline.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

The ordinance, stones & shorebreak

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Windsurf-only bayThe bay of Pozo Izquierdo is for windsurfing only when the wind is 10 knots (18.5 km/h) or more, measured on site or, failing that, by AEMET. In the Salinas zone windsurfing and kitesurfing are both allowed; when numbers or conditions make it risky, windsurfers are advised to the windward part and kitesurfers to the leeward part, so that their paths do not cross.
Own responsibility and the bathing zoneWater sports in conditions unsuitable for bathing are at the rider’s own responsibility, and must stop at once when the authorities or beach staff require it. Where a bathing zone is not buoyed it is the 200 metres off the beach, and no sport or recreational craft may use it. Boards and sails may not be left outside the marked areas.
Stones, shorebreak and the bunkerEntry and exit are over stones. At high tide a big shorebreak breaks on the rocky shore, and care is needed at low tide. A rocky section called the bunker is hard to get in and out of, especially when the tide is up. Currents run medium to strong. Wear booties and keep to the left if unfamiliar.
Strong trade windSummer days can bring 30 to 40 knots as the trade wind accelerates round the island, Wind-Hounds says, and the wind can stop when hot air arrives from the Sahara. The spot is for intermediate to expert windsurfers.
EmergenciesIn an emergency call 112. It is free from mobile and fixed phones and reaches the ambulance, fire service and police.
Stones, the bunker and the shorebreak

Entry and exit in the bay are over stones and some sand, and Salinas has a volcanic stone bottom. At high tide a big shorebreak breaks on the rocky shore; care is needed at low tide, Wind-Hounds says. A rocky section called the bunker is hard to get in and out of, especially when the tide is up. Wear booties, keep to the left if unfamiliar, and watch a few sets from the shore before launching.

The ordinance zones and the currents

The bay is for windsurfing only when the wind is 10 knots or more; kitesurfing is allowed at Salinas, with windsurfers advised to windward and kitesurfers to leeward when it is busy. Where a bathing zone is not buoyed it is the 200 metres off a beach and the 50 metres off the rest of the coast, closed to sport craft. Currents run medium to strong, Pozowinds says. Water sports in conditions unsuitable for bathing are at the rider’s own responsibility and must stop when the authorities or beach staff require it.

Kite sizes for August

For Salinas only: kitesurfing is not allowed in the bay of Pozo Izquierdo. Derived from the 19 to 22 kt mean over the rideable hours in the record, May to September, not from a fitted quiver. Wind-Hounds puts summer days at 30 to 40 kt: size well down on those days.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ECMWF IFS HRES at 9 km, cell 4.2 km from the spot, January 2017 to September 2026, 9 to 10 years a month, no station correction. A 9 km model does not resolve the acceleration Wind-Hounds describes.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from Pozowinds and the Canary Islands tourist board. Strength and time of day read from the record; Wind-Hounds’ 30 to 40 kt summer days are quoted as theirs.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 4.2 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Pozo Izquierdo

Crowds by month outside the World Cup week: no count exists. A Canarian sea-rescue number beyond 112. The ordinance’s publication reference in the provincial bulletin. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables. A station check on the wind record, which comes from a 9 km model. Surveyed launch coordinates, and a position for Salinas. A wing launch named by a school. A water temperature by month from an official or measuring body. Guide photographs.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
