Per-launch tide notes

Sotavento lagoon
Low—Mid—High—

Tidal: only at certain periods of the month, about four hours of kiting a day at most.

Risco del Paso
Low—Mid—High—

The lagoon reaches about hip height at high tide. Hours per tide state unknown until tide data arrives.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Offshore drift & the tidal lagoon

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

EmergenciesIn an emergency call 112.
Offshore driftThe wind blows side-shore to offshore from the left. A rider who drops a kite or breaks kit drifts out to sea. Ride only where a centre’s rescue boat covers you.
A tidal lagoonThe lagoon is tidal and only there at certain periods of the month, for about four hours of kiting a day at most. Check the tide before riding.
Shore dumpIn strong wind a big shore dump breaks at high tide.
Rental levelIndependent kite rental at Risco del Paso needs IKO level 3 or VDWS level 5 and two supervised hours on the first day.
The tidal lagoon

A sandbank separates the lagoon from the sea. The lagoon is only there at certain periods of the month, reaches about hip height at high tide, and gives about four hours of kiting a day at most. In strong wind a big shore dump breaks at high tide.

Offshore drift and rescue

The wind blows side-shore to offshore from the left, so a rider who drops a kite drifts out to sea. The centres run rescue boats and jet skis, and the spot guides say the rescue is paid. Ride only where a rescue boat covers you. In an emergency call 112.

Derived from the mean near 15 kt over the season’s rideable hours in the record, March to July, not from a fitted quiver. The record likely reads low here: spot guides put summer at over 20 kt, so bring smaller sizes too.

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 2.3 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Sotavento, Fuerteventura

A wind record that agrees with the centres: this one reads low and needs a station check before the grade. Any rules instrument for the beach or the lagoon licence. A head count of riders by month: the crowd tiers are compiled research. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. Surveyed launch coordinates. A water temperature. Licensed photographs.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
