Elands Bay

What it's actually like

Elands Bay, Elandsbaai in Afrikaans, is a small village on South Africa’s West Coast, about 220 km north of Cape Town, which its hotel calls a paradise for surfers. Cape Town windsurfers drive up, a trip of over two hours from Table View, on days when the wind does not reach the Cape Town spots.

It works in a south-south-westerly or south-westerly, and the rocky ridge that runs south-east from Baboon Point, the headland at the south end of the bay, accelerates the wind.

The windiest run in the record is October to February, when about seven days in ten clear 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, with January the pick at 76 per cent.
