Rocks, swim zones & offshore wind

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

EmergenciesFor any sea rescue in South Africa dial 112 from a mobile or call the NSRI on 087 094 9774. NSRI Station 18 at Melkbosstrand covers Big Bay.
Swim zones at Big BayThe Cape Town Kite Club names two swim zones at Big Bay to keep clear of. The first is Klein Baai, the flat water south of the rocks, where the local swimming community asks kiters to keep clear. The second is the lifeguarded zone in front of the lifeguard station, marked by yellow-red flags: keep well clear of it whether or not the lifeguards are there. The club says it is OK to tack out and pass behind.
Rocks at Big BayRocks lie on both sides of the Big Bay entrance. Find them from the shore before you launch.
Offshore windThe NSRI says never to kite in offshore wind, when the wind blows from land out to sea, unless you’re an expert with rescue support. The Cape Town Kite Club says Sunset Beach can be a bit cross-off, so take care, though it often comes back on as the coast curves round. Check the angle at each beach before you rig.
Cold waterCompiled research puts the sea at around 15 to 17°C in the season, not measured. Wake Up Stoked calls a 4/3 wetsuit the best option, though some riders wear a 3/2 with short legs.
Rock at Big Bay

Rocks lie on both sides of the Big Bay entrance, with waves forming between them. Find them from the shore before you launch. No other rock on the Blouberg beaches is recorded in the sources used here; walk each launch before you rig.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ecmwf_ifs at 9 km, cell 3.32 km from the spot, January 2017 to September 2026, 9 to 10 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from the Cape Town Kite Club spot guide. Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordA 9 km global model, not a station. Treat the shares as a guide until a station check ships.

04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 3.3 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Cape Town - Blouberg

A counted crowd reading: the crowd rows are compiled research. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates, and a wing launch named by a school. A measured water temperature. Licensed photographs. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
