Bye-laws, reef, gusts & cold water

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Bathers and designated areasNo one may windsurf, kitesurf, surf or use a stand-up paddle board in close proximity to bathers. The council may designate areas of any beach where the use of surf boards, kite boards and sail boards is restricted or prohibited. Follow the directions of an authorised person or a member of An Garda Síochána.
Tuition and vehiclesTuition in surfing or other water sports may be offered from a beach only with a permit obtained in advance from the council. Without council consent, motor vehicles are barred from listed beaches including Castlegregory and Maharabeg, and off-road vehicles from others including Killshannig and the Back Beach at the Maharees. A breach can bring a fixed payment notice of 75 euros, or a fine of up to 1,904.61 euros on summary conviction.
EmergenciesIn an emergency, dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
Gusts, reef and shorebreakAt Fermoyle the wind comes over the mountains and is a little gustier. Mossies is a reef. Every beach but Magherabeg has waves and a shorebreak, and Kilcummin breaks over sandbars. Look at each beach from the shore before you launch.
Cold water and offshore windThe water is cold: wear a wetsuit. Check the wind angle at each beach before you rig: a wind blowing off the beach carries a rider or a dropped kite out to sea. Do not ride in an offshore wind.
The reef, the sandbars and the gusts

Mossies is a reef with right-handers. Every beach but Magherabeg has a shorebreak; Kilcummin breaks over sandbars, and Gowlane steps up in wave size. At Fermoyle, sheltered by Brandon Head, the wind comes over the mountains and is a little gustier. Look at each beach from the shore before you launch.

The bye-laws, bathers and vehicles

Under Kerry County Council’s Beach Bye-Laws 2022, no one may windsurf, kitesurf, surf or use a stand-up paddle board in close proximity to bathers, and the council may designate areas where boards and kites are restricted or prohibited. Tuition from a beach needs a council permit obtained in advance. Motor vehicles and off-road vehicles are restricted on listed beaches without council consent. In an emergency, dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from Météo-France AROME France HD via Open-Meteo: a 1.5 km grid, read at the cell 0.1 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Brandon Bay

Crowds by month: no count exists for Brandon Bay yet. The text of the Beach (Amendments) Bye-Laws 2026. A weather station to settle the gap between the record and ERA5. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables. Surveyed launch coordinates for every beach but Kilshannig. A windsurf launch named beach by beach. A water temperature measured at the bay (the figures used are Surf-Forecast’s seasonal guide). Licensed guide photographs. A webcam.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
