Offshore wind, the reef & kiting hours

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Offshore windThe wind blows offshore. Kite Insider says riders who cannot hold ground drift away from the beach and need a boat, which costs money and time. Boat and jet-ski rescue comes from the schools on the beach.
Emergencies at seaCall the Coast Guard on 913, free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Reef and the yellow buoysCoral starts about 100 metres offshore and riders are asked to keep off it. Yellow buoys mark the outer boundary of the riding area and are not to be crossed. The bottom is seaweed-covered reef with pebbles, stones and coral in places; Kite Insider says booties make the walk in and out much easier.
Kiting hoursKite Insider reports posted rules that allow kiting only before 10:00 and after 16:30, with 10:00 to 16:00 reserved for the windsurfing school. It says a before 10:00 and after 17:00 version also circulates, enforcement on the beach is inconsistent, and no Aruban municipal ordinance confirming any time rule has been found. It also lists no kiting after sunset. Confirm with a school on the day.
Gusts near the beachKite Insider says the wind is often gusty and wind-shadowed close to the beach, because it comes over land and buildings upwind, and cleaner and stronger further out.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 3.8 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Aruba - Fishermans Huts

The kiting-hours rule from its instrument: only a spot guide reports it. A counted crowd reading: the crowd rows are compiled research. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables. A station check on the wind record. A surveyed launch point. Licensed photographs. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
