What it's actually like
Alaçatı Bay is a shallow, U-shaped bay of about 2 km² on the peninsula at the western end of İzmir province, on the Aegean. SURF magazine calls it a freeride spot in transition: the old fishing harbour is now a marina, and the west shore is a line of windsurf centres, hotels and restaurants. Inside the bay the water stays flat, with a standing area that the magazine puts at about 500 metres.
June to September is the season. In each of those months about half the days or more clear 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, and July is the pick, at about seven in ten. The mean over those rideable hours is about 14 knots. It builds through the day: in July the share of windy days rises from about 6 per cent at eight in the morning to about two in three by four in the afternoon, and SURF magazine says it is strongest in the late afternoon. In July more than half the days give a windsurfer three hours at 13 knots, enough to be planing on a big freeride sail. From October to May between about one day in five and one in three is rideable.
The magazine puts the water at about 20°C in June and over 25°C in July and August.
